Siemens S7 Plus Ethernet Driver and the Universal Device Driver Available in 6.11 Release

Posted by Kyle Carreau

ThingWorx Kepware Server / KEPServerEX version 6.11 was released in December. Updates included first-class connectivity to Siemens’ S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs, through the new Siemens S7 Plus Ethernet Driver, and support for mixed mode and unsolicited communications with the recently launched scriptable Universal Device Driver (UDD).

Installing the new Siemens S7 Plus Ethernet Driver allows automation engineers to forgo using an OPC UA connection to gather data from S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs. Instead, engineers leverage symbolic addressing for more efficient communications when connecting to PLCs on the factory floor. Utilizing automatic tag generation allows for simplified configuration without sacrificing performance.

With IoT-enabled devices, legacy equipment and other data sources supporting industrial manufacturing operations, customers need a customizable, Ethernet-based driver, that leverages a modern scripting language to collect and process industrial data across their equipment landscape. The Universal Device Driver (UDD) uses user-defined profiles, written in JavaScript, to connect to these devices. The 6.11 release of KepServerEX and ThingWorx Kepware Server includes support for unsolicited messages when using the Universal Device Driver in a mixed mode setting.

The 6.12 release of Kepware is planned for early summer with additional enhancements to the Siemens S7 Plus Ethernet driver, UDP support for the Universal Device Driver, ControlLogix v34 support and more.
