How Do I Check How Many Clients Are Connected to a Server?

Last Update: 11/12/2018

For information on checking how many clients are connected to a server, refer to the instructions below.

  1. In the lower-right corner of the server window, locate the client count. All SuiteLink clients (including multiple copies of InTouch) will be grouped as 1.
  2. Next, check the OPC Diagnostics by clicking View | Diagnostics | OPC.
  3. Click Start and let the diagnostics run for a while before stopping them. Note the following:
  • The upper half of the OPC Diagnostics window lists events; the bottom half lists the details of the event selected in the top half.
  • The upper window pane displays Client IDs that are arbitrarily assigned by the server. Events with different Client IDs are from different client connections. Some complex clients make multiple connections (multiple Client IDs) at the same time.
  • To identify clients, look for tag names, group names, and so forth.

For Non-OPC Client Connection Protocols

  1. In the server, click Tools | Options. Then, select the tab for the respective client protocol: FastDDE/SuiteLink, DDE, or iFIX PDB Settings.
  2. Uncheck the Enable checkbox. Then, click OK.
  3. Next, click Tools | Reinitialize. This will disconnect all clients. Clients that attempt to re-connect using the disabled protocols will be unable to do so.
  4. Identify the client by the posted errors. The client count may also help determine how many clients of each kind were connected.
  5. To isolate remote vs. local connections, unplug the computer from the network.

Note: OPC clients may take as long as 7 minutes to detect that the server has been unplugged.
