Testing a Client Application when the PLC/Device Is Not Connected

Last Update: 11/7/2018

To test a client application when the PLC or device is not connected, users must enable the "Simulate Device" option in the server. When this option is enabled, the server will not attempt to communicate with the real device. The device in the server will turn into a bank of memory (initialized to all 0 values) that can be read from and written to by clients. For information on setting this option, refer to the instructions below.

  1. In KEPServerEX, double-click on a device to view Device Properties.
  2. Open the General tab and then select the Simulate Device checkbox.
  3. Once finished, click Apply. Then, click OK.

For more information, refer to the Simulation Mode Technical Note.

Note: In order for the value written by one client to be read by another, both clients must have the same Update Rate (OPC clients) or Scan Rate (non-OPC clients). For more information, refer to the instructions below.

  • In the OPC Quick Client, double-click on a group to view Group Properties. In Update Rate (ms.), enter a value. Then, click OK.
  • In LinkMaster, double-click on a link group in the Link Group pane located on the bottom left of the LinkMaster Configuration. In Server Update Rate, enter a value. Then, click OK.
  • In DataLogger, view the General tab. In the General Properties group, enter a value for Update Rate and then click Apply Changes.
