Can I Set Up a DDE Connection from Excel to KEPServerEX?

Last Update: 2018/11/7

Because DDE is resource intensive, it is not recommended for users that are going to read and write a lot of data. Those users should utilize an OPC connection in an Excel form instead. For users that insist on utilizing DDE, the proper formula is =<Application Name>|<Topic>!<Item> where:

  • Application Name: By default, this is set to "Kepdde".
  • Topic: The global topic is "_DDEData".
  • Item: When using the global topic, this is the same as an OPC item name. It will be "channel.device.tag".

Note: For DDE connections to work, users must be running the server interactively on the desktop and not as a service. The default setting for KEPServerEX V4 is Interactive Mode (on the desktop). The default setting for KEPServerEX V5 is Service Mode.
