Does the OPC Timestamp Reflect the DNP Point's Event Time of Occurrence?

Last Update: 2018/11/7

Whether the OPC Timestamp reflects the event time of occurrence depends on the DNP point.

  • .Explicit: The response to an explicit read will not contain an event time of occurrence. The .Explicit Tag's OPC Timestamp will be the time that the value was updated.
  • Value: A .Value Tag's OPC Timestamp will contain a timestamp sent from the device if the device is configured to send timestamps with the event. If it is not, then the OPC Timestamp will be the time on the KEPServerEX computer that the value changed. If the device sends the timestamp with the event, then the OPC Timestamp of the .Value Tag will contain that timestamp converted from UTC to the local time of the computer running KEPServerEX. Devices are configured to send the DNP Timestamp in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC); however, even when UTC is converted to the local time, it will display the time that the event occurred and not the time that the tag was updated.
Note: In order for the device to send the timestamp with an event, the point in the device must be configured with a default event variation that contains a timestamp (such as variation 2 for binary inputs).
  • .Timestamp: Users can configure another tag for the same point with the .Timestamp sub-type to see the UTC Timestamp in the value of that tag. The Timestamp to Local Time parameter (located in Device Properties | Advanced) allows users to convert UTC Timestamp to local time for the value of that tag. When this property is enabled, the received UTC Timestamp will be converted to local time and displayed in .Timestamp Tags. The default setting is the UTC Timestamp as received in the event data.

Note: For more information, refer to DNP Driver: The OPC Timestamp of a .Value Tag Reflects .Timestamp Sub-type of the Point.
